EPA ANNOUNCES NEW GUIDELINGES FOR SAFE NEEDLE DISPOSAL

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA – December 21, 2004 – It is estimated that there are nearly 3 billion syringes and pen needles used each year in the U.S. to manage medical conditions at home. The majority of these needles are being disposed of in household trash, posing a danger to solid waste and janitorial workers as well as the public.

In an effort to control this problem, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency just published its new guidelines for home needle disposal. It is expected that over the next several years, state and local governments will pass sharps disposal rules which will comply with these new federal guidelines.
Because a home sharps container is a necessary component with most of the new EPA guidelines, the demand for home sharps containers will rise dramatically in the next several years.
