ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA – June 2, 2008 – Several years ago the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published new guidelines for the disposal of home-generated sharps waste. Six disposal options are recommended by the EPA. Use of sharps containers for home waste is implicit with all the new EPA guidelines.

California and Massachusetts have passed laws which will require sharps containers for home-generated sharps waste in 2008. Many other states have legislation and rules pending for the disposal of home sharps waste. It is expected within the next several years that all 50 states will have sharps disposal regulations which will comply with the new EPA sharps waste guidelines.
